How ratings were determined: SUVs were rated in five categories: impact to the driver in a frontal crash; impact to the passenger in a frontal crash; impact to riders in the front seat during a side-impact crash; impact to riders in the rear seat during a side-impact crash; and the likelihood of a rollover in a single-vehicle crash. These SUVs received the highest rating of five stars in at least four of those categories, and no fewer than four stars in the remaining category.
