There are more than 100 different languages spoken in the community that this Des Moines community college serves, and it's that diversity, say many of its employees, which actually brings them closer together. The differences between the many immigrants and refugees that make up both the student body and faculty here are considered assets in learning. Everyone is encouraged to share their experiences and others are always eager to listen.
Even in the face of last year's budget cuts of $2.1 million, the college has stayed true to supporting the staff's education as well. An annual professional development day offers workshops in everything from computer skills to tai chi. Staffers can enroll in two regular classes per quarter for just $8 each. Funds are set aside to reimburse faculty for half of their expenses toward higher degrees, and administrative staff can apply for continuing education funds as well. As one veteran instructor of 20 years put it, "We can give and grow at the same time."
