Premera Blue Cross

It's a breeze being green in the Snohomish headquarters of Premera Blue Cross. The health care insurance company goes out of its way to make its carbon footprint a little smaller, from papering the roof with energy-efficient reflective material to adding "bio-swells" to catch and filter parking lot water runoff. Inside the building, a brisk recycling program is in place, which goes above and beyond the usual paper and plastics to include kitchen grease and compostable kitchen utensils. Carpeting and furniture is eco-friendly, and dual monitor setups have been put in place in cubicles that "make it unnecessary to print reports and waste paper," one eco-warrior staffer reports to us. And if that weren't enough, Premera also has telecommuting programs in place, along with encouragement for experimentation with commuting alternatives (such as bike storage, on-site showers and carpooling incentives).

Editor's pick

Give this architecture company a "Greenie" for its environmental ways. MulvannyG2 has won numerous awards for its sustainable designs, is nationally ranked as a top green design firm, and is the winner of MetroKC's Best Workplaces for Recycling in King County for 2008.
