You'd expect a health care insurance provider like Premera to offer stellar medical benefits. But you wouldn't automatically expect it to be a local leader in diversity. "Premera is like New York City -- all kinds of people coming from different backgrounds and cultures," one happy staffer says of the company's culture. The insurance giant also emphasizes a need to give back to the community, throwing events for local charities such as the American Red Cross and Ronald McDonald House and giving away more then $1.2 million annually to charities. Management stresses the importance of a healthy work/life balance -- aided by the company's Snohomish County headquarters, sparing most employees the stop-and-go commute into Seattle.
