The word in from the Eastside is that the 97 employees of a small credit union in Bellevue are quite happy with their jobs. It's not perks or parties that keep them smiling -- they just feel great about the way they can help people. "I am very proud to be an employee of Qualstar Credit Union," one worker says. "Our employees are taking the time to talk and listen to what the member has to say, and if we can help improve their financial situation, that is our goal." The prime directive at Qualstar is to make a positive change in a customer's finances every time they call. That gives employees of the not-for-profit company a sense of integrity in their day. So does their hands-on work in the community, like cleaning up the yard at a child-care center and helping to build tree houses for underprivileged kids. A strong benefits package that includes automatic 401(k) contributions, a pension plan, flexible spending accounts and quarterly bonuses certainly helps -- but for these do-gooders, it's just gravy.
