Best large company - Pierce County

Columbia Bank

PHOTO Columbia Bank's Tacoma headquarters. The employees of Tacoma's Columbia Bank love what they have in their workplace: executives strolling through the office, asking about their kids; a presence in the community and pride in supporting local arts and charities; a feeling of respect and warmth. Many in the banking world have seen those things disappear as small companies get swallowed up by bigger fish. But the employees of Columbia Bank tell us one of the best things about their company is its commitment to remaining independent and retaining those qualities that make happy workers. At 700 people, Columbia's staff is small by bank standards. But in Pierce County, their presence is a large and positive one. They sponsor the Tacoma Rainiers baseball team, a monthly art walk and numerous arts organizations, and they encourage their employees to support them as well. Best of all, staffers say that they are considered customers of the bank, and they receive exactly the same service and respect as the rest of its clients.
