Health insurance isn't usually what most people think of when they hear "nonprofit," but it's not as uncommon as you might think in the industry. Premera Blue Cross is one of about 30 "blue plan" providers in the country that operate on the nonprofit business model. That means that without having to impress Wall Street, the customer's best interest is the greater concern. Premera employees appreciate that -- especially when it's a person's health on the line. "We do the good of a nonprofit but run with the efficiency and focus you normally only see at publicly held entities," said one staffer. The company sees their members not as claims to be processed, but as people whom they can help. "It is nice to work in a place that has such a high regard for their customers," another commented. And Premera's ability to compete on a national level with for-profit insurance companies assures employees there's no question their model for health care is the way to go.
