Premera employees and families enjoyed an outing to a Pigs on Parade event.
It's all about the work-life balance. Premera Blue Cross seems to be one of those rare employers that make it clear to their staff that families come first. Folks there say they're never expected to work more that eight hours a day, and when they're done, they're done. Home is for family time, not catching up or getting ahead on work. When family situations do arise, Premera employees are impressed with their bosses' understanding. "I have never had one bad look or 'sigh' or any repercussion when I have missed time from work due to an issue with my child," one parent said. The company also allows a great deal of schedule flexibility for working parents, who are allowed to work during off hours of the day and process insurance claims from home if need be. And they each have a flexible spending account in which pretax dollars can be designated for health care or for child day care or elder care expenses.
At the CPA firm of Johnson, Stone & Pagano employees are not just another number. The staff bragged about the flexible schedules to accommodate changing family needs, including working from home and bringing kids to work if necessary. The company offers other family-friendly benefits, such as a flexible spending plan to cover child care and medical costs.
