Best health-care company

Premera Blue Cross

PHOTO Premera president and CEO Gubby Barlow celebrated the company's award from J.D. Power & Associates. As far as health insurance providers go, Premera ranks at the top for customer satisfaction (it's not just the employees who say so -- the company has an award from J.D. Power and Associates to prove it). Many people told us about how much they believe Premera is progressively working to improve the entire face of the health care industry, not only by directing clients toward the right services, but also by directing medical service providers toward each other, and facilitating interactions so that doctors and hospitals can learn from one another. Employees stay at Premera for a long time because there is plenty of opportunity for growth and advancement from within -- staff members don't feel like they're stuck in dead-end jobs. And they feel like their well-being is important. A program called Know Your Numbers helps staff members keep their personal health in check, so that hopefully the claims they process won't end up being their own.
