Search Tips
Sometimes the easiest way to find an ad is to conduct a keyword search. On NWclassifieds, the searches are separated by section. You must visit the appropriate section to conduct your search. Search tips are also divided by section, click on the section below that you need help with.

Selecting
Categories and Choosing Keywords
Categories correspond to the classifications in the newspaper. In the "Other Categories" search - you can leave "All categories" checked to search the categories listed in the gray box, or select one or more categories to narrow down your results.
Keywords are words that you think are crucial to the ad(s) you want from the database. They should be words you expect to appear in the actual text of the classified ad. For example: searching for furniture will only return ads with the word "furniture" in the text of the ad, NOT all ads in the furniture category. You will get best results by being specific, for example, searching for "sofa bed" will get better results than searching for "old furniture".
Combining Category and keyword
You can use the keyword and category choice in combination. For example, if you are looking for beanie babies choose the category "Merchandise" and type the words "beanie baby" in the keyword field. Your search results will then include all Merchandise listings that have both words in the ad.
Advanced searching
Wildcards
If you're not sure exactly how the keyword you're looking for may be listed in the ad, you can use the "* "symbol to perform a wildcard search. For example, if you enter lab* in the keyword box, and select the "Pets" category - you will get all ads returned that have lab followed by any other letter: lab, labs, Labrador, would all be returned in your results. In contrast - if you enter Labrador, you will not get ads returned with "lab" in the text. Be careful: when using a wildcard you may get many unrelated results. It's best to narrow your search by selecting a specific category instead of "All categories" when using wildcards.
And, Or and Not
By default, we automatically run an "and" search; that is all keywords you entered must be contained in the ad for it to show up in your results. For example, if you enter black lab in the keyword box - only ads with the words black and lab will be displayed in your results.
You may also use "or" and "not" searches. If you enter "black or lab" in the keyword box, all ads that contain either the word black or the word lab will be returned. If you enter "lab not black" only ads that contain the word lab and do not contain the word black will be returned.
Thesaurus
We use a thesaurus technology that captures some common synonyms and abbreviations. For example, if you search for "bike" you will also see ads with the word "bicycle" in the text. We program these specifically - sometimes you may see unexpected results because of this. If you have a suggested term to add to our thesaurus to improve our search, drop us a line and we will take your suggestion into consideration.
These categories should be searched by going directly to the appropriate section: Jobs, Autos, Real Estate and Rentals. Death Notices can only be searched from the Death Notices page.

Autos search tips
Advanced Search
To search in Autos, first select what type of vehicle you are searching for from the left navigation: Cars & Trucks or Motorcycles (select RVs or Commercial to browse those types of vehicles). From that page, you can select various criteria to limit your search results.
To find a specific vehicle such as a 1990 Honda Accord, under $10,000, within 10 miles of your home, sold by a dealer, you would choose the following:
Select Cars & Trucks from the left navigation.
Select the following criteria:
Make: Honda
Model: Accord
Year From: 1990 to: 1990
Price from: 0 to: 10,000
Select Dealer Listings Only
Within: Select 10 miles
Zip Code: Enter your zip code
Click the search button.
Sort your results:
Results of this query will be pre-sorted by Price (high-to-low). You can re-sort the list by clicking on any of the underlined headings at the top of the columns.
